A 19th century Portuguese (Castelo Branco) embroidered coverlet made of homespun linen/flax and embroidered in silk floss thread with a central roundel with a boy and girl surrounded by blossoming flowers, scrolling vines, and birds.These are often referred to as “bridal coverlets” or “colchas.” Castelo Branco is located in the Beira Baixa region of Portugal. The designs used on these coverlets were strongly influenced by India and Persia.
